An 8 kg tumble dryer is not the most popular size by chance: it is the capacity that matches how an average family washes. Below we explain who 8 kg is meant for, how to match it to your washing machine and why a heat pump pays off especially at this size.
An 8 kg drying capacity is the family size. For a household of three to five people this drum usually dries a complete load in one go — towels, bed linen and a full family wash included. For a one or two-person household 8 kg is often generously sized; if you often run very large loads, take a look at the 9 kg tumble dryer. Torn between the sizes? Then use the buying guide.
A tumble dryer needs more room per kilo than a washing machine, because textiles take up more volume when dry. That is why you choose a dryer with an equal or slightly larger capacity than your washing machine. An 8 kg dryer combines ideally with an 8 or 9 kg washing machine: you move the whole load from one drum to the other in one go. Replacing both at once? Then look at the washing machines alongside, or consider a washer dryer if you are short on space.
All 8 kg dryers in this overview are Heinner heat pump dryers. A heat pump dryer reuses the warm air instead of heating it and blowing it away, which makes electricity use far lower than with a condenser dryer. With a full 8 kg drum in particular, that difference adds up considerably over the years. That is why we deliberately do not offer condenser or vented dryers. You can read more about the technology at the heat pump dryer.
There are still differences within heat pump dryers. Look at the energy label: the higher it is (A++ to A+++), the lower your consumption per drying cycle — and that mounts up for a family that runs it often. Also watch for sensor drying: moisture sensors measure how dry the laundry is and stop at the right moment. That prevents your textiles from overheating and saves energy. Want to filter purely on efficiency? Then take a look at the efficient tumble dryer.

An 8 kg tumble dryer is the best match for a washing machine of 8 or 9 kg. Choose a tumble dryer with the same or a slightly larger capacity than your washing machine, because dry textiles take up more room. That way you move the whole load across in one go. If you have a larger washing machine that you run fully loaded, take a look at the 9 kg tumble dryer or compare the washing machines.
8 kg is the family size and suitable for roughly three to five people. It dries a full family wash with towels and bedding in one go. For a one or two person household it is generously sized. Not sure about the right size? Then use the which tumble dryer selector.
A heat pump tumble dryer reuses the warm air and therefore uses far less electricity than a condenser tumble dryer. With a full 8 kg drum that makes a considerable difference to your energy bill over the years. That is why we sell only heat pump tumble dryers from Heinner. You can read exactly how the technology works on our heat pump tumble dryer page.
With sensor drying, moisture sensors in the drum measure how dry your laundry is. The programme stops automatically at the right moment, so your washing does not come out damp or over-dried and you waste no electricity. With a full 8 kg load in particular, that keeps your consumption low. You can read more about this in our guide to buying washing machines and tumble dryers.
The difference is in the drum capacity: a 9 kg tumble dryer takes larger or more loads at once and matches a 9 or 10 kg washing machine. An 8 kg tumble dryer is the standard family size and pairs with an 8 or 9 kg washing machine. If you rarely do really large loads, 8 kg is more than enough.
