A washing machine lasts around ten years, so it pays to lay the specifications side by side. Four things make the difference between a machine that just about fits and one that is exactly right: the capacity, the energy label, the spin speed and the programmes. Below we explain, point by point, what the figures mean for your laundry.
Capacity is the weight of dry laundry that fits in a full drum. For 1 to 2 people 6 to 7 kg is more than enough, a family runs comfortably on 8 kg, and with a large family or plenty of bed linen you go for 9 kg or more. Half-filling a drum that is too large wastes energy, while a machine that is too small means running it more often. Since the revised EU label, the scale runs from A (most efficient) to G. A washing machine with an A or B label uses noticeably less electricity and water per cycle, which adds up considerably over ten years. The spin speed (in rpm) tells you how hard the drum spins. At 1200 rpm the laundry comes out damp; at 1400 or 1600 rpm it is considerably drier. Alongside the standard cotton programme, Heinner machines often offer steam (removes creases and freshens up), anti-allergy (extra hot for mites and pollen), a quick wash for a lightly loaded cycle and eco for efficient running. As a rough guide, allow 6 to 7 kg for 1 to 2 people, 8 kg for a family and 9 kg or more for a large family or if you regularly wash duvets and bedding. The capacity refers to dry washing in a completely full drum. If in doubt, go slightly larger: you can half-fill a bigger drum, but a machine that is too small means running it more often. The EU energy rating runs from A (most efficient) to G and shows the electricity and water used per wash. A washing machine rated A or B is clearly more efficient and earns back the small price difference over the years. The eco programme washes at a lower temperature and is usually the most efficient, although it takes a little longer. The spin speed determines how dry your laundry comes out of the machine. 1200 rpm is fine if you often dry outside or on an airer, 1400 to 1600 rpm leaves the laundry noticeably drier and saves drying time if you use a tumble dryer. A higher spin speed sometimes brings a little more noise and vibration, so weigh that up if the machine is clearly audible in your home. The noise depends on the stated noise level in decibels and on the spin speed: a machine makes the most noise while spinning. A steam programme smooths creases out of your laundry, freshens up lightly worn clothing without a full wash and helps reduce allergens, which is welcome if you have sensitive skin.
