The size for one or two people
Seven kilos is enough for a one or two person household washing two or three times a week. You then run full drums, and that is exactly what makes a washing machine most efficient: the energy label applies to a full load, so a smaller machine you fill completely uses less than a large one running half empty. Tight utility space? Look for the slim models in this selection: around 45 cm deep instead of 55, with no loss of programmes.

7 kg washing machines: what to look for
Seven kilos is the smallest capacity you can still call full-sized. All the programmes are there, the spin goes up to 1400 rpm, and the machine fits where a large one will not. The choice comes down to how often you wash and how much room you have.
Enough for how much laundry?
Seven kilos of dry laundry is roughly two full baskets, or a week of clothing for two people. Washing more than three times a week means a larger drum saves you time; if two loads is your rhythm, 7 kg is the efficient choice.
Slim or standard?
Some 7 kg machines come as slim models, around 45 cm deep instead of 55 cm. That frees ten centimetres in a cupboard or bathroom without giving up programmes. The width stays 59.5 cm, the standard every installation space is built for.
What does the spin speed mean?
Spin speed decides how much water is left in your laundry afterwards. At 1400 rpm that is noticeably less than at 1000, which shortens drying time whether you use a dryer or a line. More in our washing machine buying guide.
Torn between 7 and 8 kg?
Look at your largest wash, not your average one. If your bedding fits in one go, 7 kg is enough. If you have to split it, 8 kg is more comfortable. Every size is with the washing machines.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions about 7 kg washing machines
Cannot find your question here? Feel free to get in touch with us.
Is 7 kg enough for two people?
Yes. Seven kilos of dry laundry is about a week of clothing for two people, or two full baskets. You then run two to three full loads a week, which is the most efficient way to wash. If you wash more often or large items come along regularly, look at 8 kg.
What exactly is a slim washing machine?
A slim washing machine is as wide and as tall as an ordinary one, but less deep: around 45 cm instead of 55 cm. That lets it fit a shallow cupboard or a narrow worktop. The drum is smaller, which is why slim models almost always have a 6 or 7 kg capacity.
Will a duvet fit in a 7 kg washing machine?
A single duvet usually fits, a double one does not. Bear in mind that a duvet gets considerably heavier once wet and that the drum should only be half full to wash properly. If you want to wash bedding at home, a larger drum is more practical.
