Building in: which size do you need?
A built-in microwave goes into a kitchen cabinet and keeps your worktop clear. The measurements are exacting: almost all models are made for a recess of 56 x 36 cm or 56 x 38 cm, but there are exceptions. Measure your cabinet before ordering, and allow for the ventilation space the manufacturer prescribes. Freestanding models are with the microwaves.

Built-in microwaves: what to look for
A built-in microwave is chosen differently from a freestanding one. Power and capacity are comparable; the difference lies in the recess dimensions, how the appliance is ventilated, and the finish of the trim.
Which recess size?
Most built-in microwaves are made for a standard 60 cm wide kitchen cabinet, with a recess 56 cm wide and 36 to 38 cm high. Always check the stated built-in dimensions on the product itself, and leave the ventilation space the manufacturer prescribes, usually a few centimetres at the back.
How many litres do you need?
Twenty litres is enough to heat plates and mugs. From 23 litres a larger dish fits, and at 28 litres or more you can also get an oven dish in. The external size barely changes; the gain is in the shape of the interior and the diameter of the turntable.
Grill or microwave only?
A grill makes crusts: useful for toasties, gratins, or a piece of meat that needs colour. If you want to bake in it properly, look at a combination microwave with fan heat. Without a grill it stays reheating and defrosting, and for many households that is exactly enough.
Will it match my oven?

What recess size does a built-in microwave need?

How many litres do I need?
For heating plates and mugs, 20 litres is enough. From 23 litres a larger dish fits, and at 28 litres or more you can get an oven dish in. The external size barely differs, so if your cabinet allows it, a larger capacity gives you more usable room.
What is the difference with a combination microwave?
An ordinary built-in microwave reheats and defrosts, possibly with a grill for crusts. A combination model also has fan heat, which lets you genuinely bake in it. That makes it more expensive and more complex; if you already have an oven, an ordinary microwave is usually enough.
Can I build in a freestanding microwave?
No. A freestanding model gets rid of its heat through the sides and the back, and that space does not exist inside a cabinet. Building it in leads to overheating and voids the warranty. Choose a model intended for building in, or stand a freestanding microwave freely on the worktop.
